Since Jono and I moved home in July, the family decided to go camping at Sherwin Creek campground in Mammoth. Jono took the first portion of the CPA exam the day before we left so he could relax and enjoy the camping trip. We drove up Thursday at noon with Paul and Janiel, Claire and Sterling drove up after work Thursday evening and Danielle and Brad drove up from El Segundo, where they had just moved. We rented two campsites since there are now eight of us (really?). We got there around six o’clock and set up camp. It took us (Paul, Janiel, Jono, and me) a couple of hours to set up three tents and a campsite. By the time we were done, it was too late to start a dinner by fire, so we decided to eat in town and ended up meeting Danielle and Brad at McDonalds. (Yes, we drove 6 hours to go camping and we end up at McDonalds, woo.) It was 9:30 before we got back to camp. Sterling and Claire got there about 11:30. On Friday, we hung around camp until noon just relaxing, talking, and playing games. In the afternoon, we went up to Mammoth Mountain Lodge to rent bikes. All of the kids (except Claire) went to the top to mountain bike down. Mom, Dad, and Claire took the gondola up to the top with the group and then took the gondola back down. Moutain Biking was tons of fun!...despite it being a little rocky, dusty, and the never-ending drop on one side as we travelled down the mountain. While we were biking, which took about two hours, Mom, Dad, and Claire went into town to check the fishing report and went out to Convict Lake to reserve a boat for the next day. That night, we made tinfoil dinners, Dutch oven potatoes, and Hopp’s dump cake for dinner. Saturday morning, we got up early and went to Convict Lake to fish. We rented a pontoon boat that sat all of us and went to the upper end of the lake to fish. We fished for about four hours and Jono was the first and only person to catch a fish, ya babe! It was the August fishing curse. It was so hot that no one was catching anything, though they had stocked the lake two days before but no fish were biting. We had a picnic lunch on the boat and had a fun time putting on the lake, while Sterling tried to run over a bird with the boat :). Afterward, we went back to camp and the kids went on a hike around Sherwin Creek to try and find a place to go fishing. Well, the hike was pretty anyway, no luck with the fish. When we got back we ate at The Stove (a fun country restaurant) for dinner. Later that night we made a fire and cooked banana boats and smores. Sunday morning we got up early and packed up camp. It took us six hours to drive home. We cleaned up, packed away the camping equipment and relaxed while we watched the Olympics. Oh how I love camping.
Starting the games: Settlers of Catan...a great camping favorite.
